No Sew Valentine Banner

Thank you to Jennie for having me here at Craft-O-Maniac! This has been one of the very first craft blogs I was a fan of before I started blogging and remains one of my favorites and a craftspiration to me. I am Kathy and I have been a busy bee over at my blog Sparkles And A Stove the last few weeks getting my Valentine’s mantle ready. I just love the warm reds and pinks that are everywhere this time of year and that it’s all about love. I have had so much fun both crafting and shopping to create a pretty mantle for Valentine’s Day. I am so excited about the way it turned out (a big reason being this is my first planned mantle as it’s usually a bit of a hodge podge) and am beyond excited to get to share it and a little bit about how I made the garland with you today! Garland & MantleI made the garland using 3 patterns of fabric that I cut into pennants. I used a red and white gingham print for a bit of a rustic feel and then a pink floral patter for a more romantic look then a black and white so that the mantle didn’t overdose on red and pink. I think you can have too much of a good thing! Pennant Collage  I also used the black and white fabric to wrap a styrofoam heart shown above to place on the mantle to tie in with the black and white pennant. I used my Silhouette to cut out a scalloped heart to decorate the black and white pennant that would be going in the middle of the garland. I used the same design for the pennant for the heart to tie in with the one I used in the House Full of Love frame I did above my mantle. frame  I knew I wanted to use the “Be Mine” sentiment for the mantle because it was simple and short enough that the pennants could be big enough to seen and would fit across the mantle. I decided to put a decorative pennant separating the two words so that they would be easier to read and so starting a few inches from each edge of the mantle I measured and divided the space by 7 for the 7 pennants I would need. I used a piece of heat transfer board because it was sturdy and had grid lines for easy measuring and cut a pennant shape the size I had measured in my calculations above- about 6 inches across. I then used a pen and the pennant template and traced 3 red checked pennants, 3 pink florals, and 1 black and white pennant. I cut them out by hand, but if you have a Silhouette and a fabric blade these can be done in a snap. pennant templateI did use my Silhouette to cut black scalloped circle 4.5 inches across to fit on the 6 pink and red pennants and also cut out “Be Mine” in white vinyl in Vintage font. I placed the vinyl on the pennants alternating the red and pink spelling out the sentiment. Once the pennants were up I added a little fray checker to the edges of each so that they didn’t unravel. I stretched a wide burlap ribbon shown below across the mantle to hang the pennants from and hung it from 2 tiny nails. I used mini clothes pins from the baby shower section of the craft store to secure the pennants to the burlap. I hid the nails the burlap hung from with these floral hearts also from the craft store. One red and one pink. It matches the heart I used to dress up the bird cage on my mantle. Mantle collage  So here you have it, my Be Mine Valentine’s garland. The fabric took a little time to draw and cut but the rest was easy peasy and I got the fabric on sale so the whole garland was around $15. A great price and worth every penny! I made the garland, the two rosette trees, and the wooden I Love You blocks. Everything else is courtesy of the craft store bought one piece at a time with a 40% off coupon, but you can find similar vintage looking items at thrift stores as well. Or even better use candles or candy dishes you have on hand. Garland FinalGarland & Mantle
Thanks again to Craft-O-Maniac for letting me share this craft and my mantle and to you for reading. I hope you might be able to use the project in the future if not for Valentine’s Day or even as a spring board to your own ideas. I’d love it if you popped over to Sparkles And A Stove sometime to say hi. I also wish you a very Happy Valentine’s Day!
