How to Repair Your Roof
A roof over your head is probably one of the most precious assets you own.
The roof of your home is often overlooked, exposed to the sun, rain and snow all through the year. So you may not even notice the warning signs that indicate your roof needs some repair and restoration.
There are quite a few signals of roof damage, whether caused by mechanical damage, normal wear and tear, weathering action, or simply the effect of time.
Roof Repairing is not a cheap affair. The following points need to be factored in when considering hiring a roofing company:
Area needed to be repaired: smaller areas may cost significantly
more.
Roofing Material to be used: Some materials like tile or metal roof
repairs may be more expensive to repair than asphalt shingles.
Additional reparation work and extent of damage (if applicable):
Some activities such as underlaying, sheathing, gutters, insulation,
interior structural or ceiling damage need more than a perfunctory look
on the surface. The work needed is complicated and is likely to cost you
more.
Site location and working conditions: The degree of hazard involved
while repairing your roof, such as the height of roof, slipperiness
conditions, older roofs prone to collapse under weight, roofs damaged
by fire and so on, can determine the risk and the cost involved.
Roof Repair vs. Roof Replacement: The extent of repair that will
decide whether you need to repair patches or replace the roof entirely,
will give you an estimate of the cost. Let’s read on to know how to repair your roof!
Tools and equipment needed to repair your roof:
Sturdy ladder
Protective gear- hard hat, gloves, eye protection are a must
Sheathing material
Felt Layer
Shingles or roofing material
Insulation
Nail gun
Hammer
STEP 1: Clear the Debris
First, you need to remove all the old wooden framework, splintered tiles and shingles away to know how much of area needs to be repaired. Moreover, some hidden spots such as attics that may be water damaged, need to be examined closely in clear daylight.
STEP 2: Repair Sheathing
For sturdy fixing of roof tiles, first the roof has to be reframed and then a base (sheathing) is laid down. The standard material for this is 8 ft, 1/2-inch-thick plywood.
Measure the gap on the roof section which needs shingling, cut the sheathing to size and nail it securely to roof rafters. The sheathing is laid in a brick pattern for interlocking and enhanced strength.
It is undesirable to lay the entire 8-foot sheathing onto the roof, as the long piece is structurally unstable and prone to sagging in the middle.
STEP 3: Lay Felt Paper
Use a stapler to fix a 6-inch starter strip at the bottom of the roof. Ensure that you leave a 1-inch overhang on the eaves for drainage into gutters. Work from the bottom up and lay the remaining felt layers with a 2-inch overlap margin. To ensure the maximum hold, nail a tar strip on each felt layer.
STEP 4: Install Shingles
Shingles should be laid starting at a bottom corner of the roof, towards the top, overlapping the top set with the bottom in a pyramid pattern. This style of laying roof tiles is the best way to ensure interlocking.
For each shingle, use six nails on the tar sheet to ensure the best hold on the
sheathing. Layer the existing shingles on top of the new for an even and
seamless look.
You may be motivated to fix your roof yourself, as it looks like a good way to
save on the costs.
