Your Mattress Needs a Cover, and Here’s Why

Although consumers may joke about incontinence and swear they don’t need a mattress protector, it really is a good idea to use one. They are inexpensive and easy to clean, so there’s no real reason to avoid them. Here are just a few reasons adding a cover to your mattress – particularly if it is new – is a great way to go.

Longevity

Today’s mattresses usually can last a good 10-15 years, and you can make sure you end up on the higher part of that range if you use a mattress protector. Because the surface won’t be exposed to liquids, stains, and sweat, the foam inside will be less likely to become damaged. The mattress can retain its “new” feeling for longer and avoid most odors. Also, if you’ve just purchased the mattress and might want to return it after a trial period, the store will not exchange it if it has any stains or odors.

Cleanliness

This is probably the number one reason to use a cover. Every night we perspire while we sleep, and that can seep through to an unprotected mattress. Mattresses can come in contact with a variety of different liquids, and although we can wash the sheets, it can be difficult to spot-treat a mattress. Stained mattresses usually are ineligible for warranty work as well, so a cover can prevent that coverage from being void.

Mite Protection

Humans shed skin cells all day long, and that means there are plenty of skin cells in our beds. Without a mattress cover, the cells go right into the mattress, inviting hungry dust mites to have a party among the coils. Many people are allergic to dust mites, an allergy that can lead to eczema, shortness of breath, and wheezing. Add in the moisture that enters an unprotected mattress, and you’ve got the perfect conditions for mites and mold that can take their toll on your lungs while you sleep.

These are just a few reasons you should invest in a mattress cover. The waterproof versions may offer the most protection, but take a look at all the different types to figure out which will work best on your mattress. You can rest assured your mattress is protected from stains, liquids, and other undesirables.
