The summer travel season may be over, but a new season full of brilliant colors and cool days is here. Deciduous trees make a spectacular show before they drop their leaves for winter’s chill. As chlorophyll slowly drops within the leaves, other pigments shine through. Orange, yellow and even purple hues dot the landscape in certain areas. If you’re an avid traveler, you’ll want to experience the fall foliage at least once in your life.

Follow Local Resorts

Because foliage locations vary each year, plan well ahead of time to find the best spots. Go online and use social media. Follow local resorts that post pictures throughout the year, including Mohonk Mountain House. You’ll be able to see real-time pictures to determine your next travel destination. You can even pose questions on the social site to verify if a picture is recent or from a previous year. Because they want your business, resorts are quick to respond.

Spur of the Moment

If you live relatively close to a lush area, extensive online research isn’t necessary. Take a few days off to drive around favorite areas. Stop in at bed and breakfasts to ask about local parks and their abundance. Local diners and shops are other good resources because residents often have a better knowledge of the surrounding area. A hidden gem could be just around the corner. Other travelers may miss it.

Attention to Weather Patterns

Use weather apps on your smartphone or tablet to watch weather patterns. If a freeze or heat wave strikes an area, fall foliage is typically lackluster or not developed at all. You want sunny conditions with cool overall weather. These conditions are perfect to allow leaf pigments to flourish. The sunny days also make for great photos as the blue sky casts a warm glow across the leaves swaying in the breeze.

Be Alternative

Fall foliage visitors often want to drive through the forested areas, especially if the temperatures are relatively cool. However, you can experience the color with vivacity if you rent a bicycle from a local business. Take the bikes out to the colorful trees and ride under the canopies. You’ll have a completely different experience being under the trees than you would gazing at them from afar. Bundle up and bring along a loaded picnic basket. You may find picnic tables or even a fallen tree trunk to relax on and enjoy the sights.

Make a Return

Foliage is different every year, giving you a unique experience each time you visit. Consider using a travel rewards card to gain points for hotel stays, rental cars and flights. When you use it appropriately, it could pay for the bulk of your travel costs. Make a fall foliage vacation an annual event to help the entire family see the importance of nature and its place in the world. You could even stay at the same resort or hotel each year to make it a familiar and comforting good time.

Nature has its ups and downs, making it crucial to research your trip before selecting an area. Foliage that was gorgeous last year could be lackluster this year. When you do find the perfect area, however, you’ll be amazed at nature’s beauty and power.
