Feautred Guest Post- {Beautiful Fall Pumpkin Mobile}

HELLO THERE CRAFTOMANIAC’S- We are the husband and wife duo over at
The Rooster and The Hen we created this Fall Pumpkin Mobile out of yard sale finds. we’ve got tons of ideas on decorating, crafting, and DIYing on the cheap.

Let’s take it back a couple weeks ago to a post I did on the magic of yard sales. We went around with our camera one Saturday morning with the pure intent of documenting yard selling techniques. In the frenzy of it all, we forgot about taking the pictures we were after, and ended up having one of the best garage sale days ever. We had so much loot, we could barely fit it into our 7 passenger van. And to top it off, we got insane deals on all of it.

This is a very happy me after picking up all these pumpkins for a quarter a piece. I had seen a picture on Martha Stewart of stacked painted pumpkins and was excited to try it.

Later that same day, I came upon a sale with several hundred dollars worth of high-end metallic paints, and the owner practically gave them away. I wasn’t entirely sure what I’d be doing with them, but how could I walk away?

Turns out, however, that everyone and their brother has been hard at work creating their own version of stacked painted pumpkins this season, so I had to come up with a new plan.

I knew that I would be painting the pumpkins with my metallic paint, but didn’t want to just stack them like I’ve seen so many times this year- a look that I still love BTW. Finally, it hit me. I’d try hanging them outside my door like ornaments. But alas, the crappy weather we’ve got made that almost impossible, and I wasn’t in the mood to be patient for the storm to pass.

Dustin and I put our heads together and came up with the idea of making a pumpkin mobile – letting the pumpkins hang from an inverted wreath we’d also picked up for a quarter (woot woot!). We found the perfect place to hang the whole contraption, right in the middle of our circular dining room light.

I started off by painting each pumpkin a different harvesty metallic shade. While they were drying, we fastened the wreath using bits of flexible wire to the center of the light fixture.

Then, I strung the pumpkins with some clear thread (yes, another score from that same magical day) and tied them at various lengths to the wreath itself. We liked the look of it, but thought it needed a bit more, so we added a few painted leaves to give it the umph it needed.

All in all, the whole project didn’t take more then an hour or so. My dining room finally looks like it’s ready for fall, and I’m ready to curl up with a book and hot chocolate and get ready for fall myself.
