Mad Scientist Party

HELLO ALL- Mindy here, I blog over at the “Creative Juice” I am so happy to be visiting today.
I AM SHARING MY..
MAD SCIENTIST PARTY!
so my little guy turned 2.
i can’t even believe it.
for his birthday we hosted a
MAD SCIENTIST PARTY
and i’m not going to lie – it was SO much fun!
you may look at these pictures and think that i spent a ton but
you know i am a DIY, deal- searching, cheap – made – fabulous kinda gal
so even though it was not under $50 like it was supposed to be… {oops. sorry honey.}
it didn’t break the bank either.
here are JUST SOME
of my favorite moments from the party

ever since this party was up on my blog i have
been asked many times for my sugar cookie recipe and
where to get the cookie cutters i used!
so here it is!

THE PERFECT SUGAR COOKIE
i love this recipe because sugar cookies are a staple at my parties.
they are such a blank canvas for creativity!
here is my favorite from a good friend we went to dental school with:

2 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
3 eggs
1 cup buttermilk {or 1 cup of milk and 1 tsp baking soda mixed}
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp of almond extract
1 tsp of baking powder
6 cups of flour
1. blend shortening and sugar until smooth in a large bowl
2. add eggs and blend until smooth
3. combine buttermilk, vanilla, and almond in a small bowl; add to mixture and blend
4. sift in 1 cup of flour and baking powder and blend
5. continue adding flour one cup at a time until all is incorporated and dough is slightly sticky. {sometimes i add a 1/2 cup more if it seems too sticky}
6. place flour on a parchment sheet fit for your pan and roll the dough onto your parchment
7. use cookie cutters and remove excess dough and place parchment onto pan
8. cook at 350 for 4-5 minutes for small cookies and 8-9 minutes for larger cookies
my little helper 🙂

it makes a lot of cookies….
excuse my ugly baking sheets. i have since updated them if you are concerned 😉

decorating…
use any of your favorite royal icing recipes- this is my favorite. pipe the outside lines with a thicker icing and then fill with a separate color. this is my favorite tutorial on how to properly outline and fill a sugar cookie. i seriously love these cookies because it did not require many colors and it can match any color scheme! i got the cookie cutters from here and the “bubbles” are white sugar pearls by wilton.

  1. Thanks for sharing the cookie decorating links. Very helpful. I might even attempt decorated sugar cookies this holiday season now that I’ve seen some of these great tips!
